Be sure to copy your data back to a local drive before your session ends.Ĥ. When using the VCL, performance speeds are improved by "pushing" data to the VCL at the beginning of your session and working with the data there. Basically, the application is run remotely, but your desktop is set up to view it as if it were running locally. The VCL is a remote access service that allows you to reserve a computer with a desired set of applications for yourself, and remotely access it over the Internet. Anyone may use the Virtual Computing Lab ( ). If your college or department maintains their own lab, you will need to check to see what version of ArcGIS they have available. Some campus labs may still be running earlier versions of ArcGIS, but all unity labs should have version 10 running.

On-campus students may use unity or departmental labs. (E-mail re: message board and course web site will follow in a day or two)Ģ. I will also set up an ArcGIS Installation Forum on Message Board so you can share issues and ways that have been found to solve problems with installation.
MICROSOFT ACCESS FOR MAC NCSU SOFTWARE
Problems with software installation or licensing should be addressed to We cannot provide computer consultations.
MICROSOFT ACCESS FOR MAC NCSU LICENSE
Borrowing is good for, I believe, 30 days so you will need to 'touch' the license server and renew this periodically throughout the semester. If you cannot access the license server and you have not borrowed a license, you will not be able to run the software. Slow connection speeds can also cause the server to 'time-out' and the software will not open. I have found that firewalls (either on the NC State license server or on public internet access points) almost always block access to the license server when one is traveling. If you travel (especially if you travel out of the country), you must set this up in advance. This will allow you to run the software for a limited period of time while disconnected from the internet. Make sure all features are checked and click OK. Once you have successfully opened the software, see information below re: borrowing the license.Īnyone with ArcGIS installed on their home computer or laptop may set up license 'borrowing.' Once you have successfully installed the software and accessed the license server, go to ArcGIS Administrator > ArcGIS Desktop > Borrow/Return. The most common issue that comes up is failure to set up the appropriate license server information, so make sure you read and follow instructions for entering the license server. ArcGIS is available under a concurrent license agreement, which means that the program must touch a license server in order for the software to function.

If you choose to do this, you must install ArcGIS Desktop 10, ArcInfo Workstation 10 and the appropriate service pack (service pack 3).īe sure to download and read the license server information and installation instructions. Any student, faculty or staff with an NC State unity ID can download and install the software () on your home computer. You must use ArcGIS Desktop 10, ArcInfo Workstation 10 and service pack 3.ġ. ***Note that neither the demonstration version of ArcGIS nor the student version that may accompany the (optional) book are sufficient for this course. Virtual private networking (VPN) is a method of securing data sent across the Internet, essentially creating a private network that will allow one to access university resources as if you were in a campus lab. ***For all students working from home or other off-campus location, downloading files and accessing software will be easier if you first log in using the VPN.

If you are traveling and cannot access the license server, use the VCL, etc. So, if you have ArcGIS installed on your home computer and it crashes at the worst possible moment (it's never at the best possible moment), make sure you have allowed yourself time to use the VCL or to travel to campus to use a unity lab.

***All students should have a 'backup plan' for when things go wrong (and they will go wrong - Murphy's Law). Several options for accessing the software are described below.
